Most people call plumbers when something in their plumbing system breaks down. Such things like links, faucets, bathrooms, any kind of piping, etc is what plumbers fix. But aside from fixing things they can also help put the right plumbing in place when a new building is being built.

Plumbing services have to follow certain codes put in place by the government. Though the designing and setting up of a plumbing system will depend largely on the capability of the plumbing contractors, he should adhere to the strict federal, state and local codes. These codes decide the internal diameter of plumbing pipes.

They also recommend where those shut off valves will be placed, what materials can be used for the pipes, what the safety precautions are that need to be followed, what kind of pipes should be used where, how these pipes should be placed, the slope of the pipe and so on. There are certain limitations that could mar the efficacy of those plumbing services. When one hires a successful plumbing service, they will make the best use of the available resources and work to the best of their ability. The water availability and the location of the home all play an important role in plumbing services.

Before you decide on any plumber, read the other posts in this blog that give you advice on how to hire a plumbing company and what questions to ask them.

The plumbing trade can be a lucrative career and demand is increasing even with a slow economy. The number of institutes offering courses in this training is also increasing. If we want to continue to have a clean and comfotable life, then plumbers are a necessity to ensure all of water, toilets, etc works. A lot of waste water is generated daily. Proper disposal of that water is very essential for keeping our surroundings clean. Dirty surroundings can spread deadly diseases.

In today’s world, you need a plumber in many places like building houses, offices, hospitals, airports, and malls etc. Any construction project requires a plumber to ensure that part of the building functions. Therefore a career in this field is not a bad idea, since plumbing issues is something we just cannot get away from.

There is a plethora of courses out there, so you need to do your homework on which ones you need to take. There are many ways of doing plumbing courses. Firstly there are part time courses in plumbing, which are ideal for people who are already working somewhere else. Then there are courses in plumbing which are online. Although online courses in plumbing provide good knowledge of plumbing, they are not ideal for people who are wishing to take up this profession full time.

Even colleges are offering many full time courses in plumbing. Generally courses in plumbing offered by big and reputed college have an extensive practical training, which online courses cannot offer which is very beneficial.

Once you have decided to become a plumber, it is essential to understand certain facts about this profession before selecting one of the courses in plumbing. All the plumbing courses in the world are not going to teach as good as real life experience, which is why many learn best on the job. There are many types of problems and complications that a plumber may face while working. A plumber has to take quick (one the spot) decisions to solve those problems. A plumber has to work in all environments and even in dirty places. This is not for those who are afraid of getting a little dirty and definitely not a white collar job.

It is no secret that water and sewage repairs can be very costly. The way to save on this is by reducing your water consumption. Also, nowadays it is in “style” to be green, and you would not want to harm mother nature by over-consuming resources we are short of. Especially if we are talking about something simple to fix like the water consumed from the toilet flush. Here are some money saving and water saving tips to keep your consumption in check:

The outside:

Use rocks instead of grass so you don’t have to water your lawn. If this is absolutely not an option make sure there are no water leaks or slab leaks. Also , pay attention to any water buildup in your yard. If you have an area where water frequently collects, you may want to talk to a landscaper about ways to build up the ground level.

If you have a pool or spa do routine checks to make sure all the plumbing is working smoothly. Basic concerns and check points for water conservation here are:

Use a pool/spa cover to help lower water loss due to evaporation. Not only will this prevent having to refill as often, but it will keep the temperature warmer lowering heating costs.

Pay attention to chemical usage. If there are sudden spikes in the amount needed or in algae growth-especially after adding chemicals, then you may have a leak. Check as many of the water lines to your pool as possible, and note the ground above them, if the ground there is wetter than other parts of the yard, you likely have a leak.

The automatic water filler- fillers that constantly fill and release water are a warning that there is a leak somewhere along the lines.

Bathrooms and Kitchen:

The most common areas where water consumption is high is in the kitchen and in the bathrooms of the home. Check the sinks routinely for any leaks. Also, if you live in an older home chances are you have an old toilet that is a water guzzler. I would highly recommend replacing it with a newer more eco-friendly option.

Many people know can work a plunger and pour chemical drain cleaners down a clogged drain. Yet, sometimes these measures are not enough to clean a clogged drain. Many times the drain stays clogged or the it re-clogs in some cases. When this happens, often because something unusual was pushed or flushed down a drain (think children), more drastic measures are needed. Below we will explore such methods.

Drain Cleaning
When drain cleaners and plungers are not effective try a plumbing snake which is to be fed down the pipe to see if the clog can be reached. For clogged sinks, you should also try cleaning the trap and feeding the snake down the pipe that way. Covering the overflow valve for sink drains can help build pressure and may help bust through the clog.

If is not effective for your drain, a power auger that can more effectively cut through the clog will be needed. This machine should only be used by people who have some basic plumbing knowledge to avoid further harm to your draining system. If you do not have any plumbing experience, I would suggest just hiring a plumber. Pipes are not indestructible. Nobody particularly revels in calling a plumber, but sometimes it’s the wisest and even the most frugal course of action.

Maintenance:

The companies which sell you drain cleaners may not want you to know this, but often times you can mix Baking soda and boiling water or baking soda and vinegar to unclog a drain. For drain maintenance, using an enzyme culture once a month can help ensure your drain stays cleared. If you do use a drain cleaner, make sure you do not mix brands as chemicals can often react violently with other compounds and do serious damage to your pipes and/or your septic system.

Number 1: Know What The Problem Is

Plumbing is one of the most important parts of your home. You can honestly survive without heat and air, without electricity and without gas (although you really would not want to), but there is almost no way that you can live in your home without your plumbing working. How would you take a shower? Restroom use?

What I am getting at is that plumbing is much more important then most people give it credit. So with that being said, most people have no idea how their plumbing system is piped in. It is a rarity to come across a home owner who knows what kind of pipes are used for their water or sewer lines.

Now, most of you will think or say, “What does it matter? A pipe is a pipe, right?” and the answer is always going to be of course not. If your house is 20 years old or older, then you probably do not have very good piping. PVC or PEX is really the only way to go. Older men still think copper is the best, but copper is metal and water is extremely corrosive. So you really need to find out what your lines are like and be aware of what is out there and what you have and don’t have in your home.

Also, you may inherit plumbing defects in your house, especially if its an older home as mentioned above. However, this pertains to every home, from brand new to 100 years old. If your house was just built, you may want to keep an eye out for trouble and the best way for this is to check ahead of time to see how long your warranty lasts, if you have one. It is sad, but there are a lot of contractors out there that do work of little quality.

For example, something could have gone wrong during the building of the home.. Let’s say after the plumbing system has been inspected, a young plumbing apprentices accidentally jack hammered into a sewer pipe and to keep himself from getting into trouble he fills the hole back up with concrete, never telling his boss. Now, the concrete is in your sewer line and you already have a big problem. Since no one ever really uses the plumbing until you move in, the problem goes unnoticed until one day when your bathroom floods, a week after you move in.

What happens next is the plumbers come out and start running snakes and cameras to find out what is going on. Then they discover your real problem and tell you that they have to jack up your kitchen floor and rip out your counters just to fix the problem. Of course the plumber will have to pay for all of this, but you and your family will have to suffer.

The above is a real story that happened to someone. Before moving into any home, hire your own plumber to make sure things are working properly.

Number 2: Ask Questions

The plumber may seem annoyed if you follow this piece of advice, but I say let him be. He is working on your house, the place you call home. You have never met this man, or woman although that is very rare, so don’t think that you can just automatically trust them. Most service plumbers work off of commission, meaning the more they charge you, the more money they make. Often times a crooked plumber will charge you for everything he possibly can and even add on a few charges as well. Then he will say that he is giving you a five dollar discount because he feels bad about how high the bill is. Yea right!

The best way to prevent something like this is to be vigilant. This basically means to be aware of what the plumber is doing at all times. If he says that he is going to have to run snake cable down your main sewer
drain, ask him how much it costs. He will probably say something along the lines of $89.50 for the first 50 feet and $0.80 for every foot thereafter. If this is the case, watch him run the cable. Most sections of one inch cable are 15 feet long. So if he only uses three sections, that means you owe him $89.50. However, let’s say he tries to tell you that he ran 75 feet, well now you have him caught.

Asking questions will help protect you by keeping the plumber honest.

Number 3: Shop for a Plumber

When a problem comes up with your plumbing, shop around first before deciding on a plumber. That means going to Google and looking up plumbing companies as well as reviews from customers. Nowadays, people do research before deciding on a service provider, so be vigilant and check them out first!

When you need a plumber in the Los Angeles Area you can find rather easily by going to your favorite search engine and typing your city name along with the word plumber. You can also go to Yellow Pages as well as Angies List, Yelp or here to find qualified service providers. But that is only step #1. You are likely to see a lot of names in this way, so how do you know who to hire?. Are you going to believe what the advertisements say? You shouldn’t.

There are good plumbers and bad plumbers. Some states regulate plumbers more than others do. You are at risk when you dial a plumber and you do not ask the right questions.

Waiting until you have a plumbing emergency is human nature and is likely to drive you to accept the first plumber who’s available. This is why you should screen some plumbers before you need them so you have someone trustworthy to call when you need them. It’s true that plumbers charge a lot of money, are an independent type, and are often too busy for new customers. However, we have made sure our service providers are not, so no need to worry there.

When you get a plumbing contractor that you feel good about, ask some key questions. Let me give you a few flush-out questions to ask over the phone:

• Are you a licensed plumber?
• Are you insured?
• Do you offer 24-hour emergency service?
• Does your company do drain cleaning?
• Are all of your service technicians licensed plumbers?
• Is service and repair work your specialty?
• What is your normal response time once a call for help is placed?
• Are you a member of the Better Business Bureau?
• Do you have a Web Site?
• What are your service rates?
• Do you charge for travel time?
• Are your trucks fully stocked, or do you charge for going to get parts?
• Do you charge overtime rates, and if so, when do they come into effect?
• Can you provide 5 references of clients who I can talk to?

Don’t wear out the interrogation. You can alienate plumbers quickly if you’re not careful. Remember, they are an independent bunch. Your goal is to feel out the plumbing contractor to see if it might be a suitable fit for your needs.

Do your homework. Line up three contractors who meet your criteria. It is better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Plumbers, electricians, and heating mechanics are often a homeowner’s best friend. Make nice early and enjoy the rewards when you have a real problem.
